mwbamwbqHalobates mwbgEschscholtz, 1822 è un mwbwgenere di mwcainsetti della mwcqfamiglia mwcgGerridae, noti come mwcwinsetti pattinatori marini.cite-ref-cheng1975-1-0[1]cite-ref-tremblay-2-0[2]
È l'unico genere di insetti presente, con 5 mwfqspecie, in mare aperto: queste specie conducono l'intera esistenza nelle acque degli oceani a distanza di centinaia di mwfgmiglia dalla terraferma; un'altra quarantina di specie è stata descritta in acque costiere riparate. Tutte le specie vivono esclusivamente sull'interfaccia aria-mare, come parte della comunità del mwfwneuston.

Descrizione

Sono insetti di piccole dimensioni, di colore grigio-argenteo, lunghi appena 3,5–6mwia mm.
Come gli altri membri della famiglia mwigGerridae, possiedono mwiwantenne a 4 articoli, e mwjaocchi composti globulari.
L'mwjgaddome è corto e compresso in rapporto al mwjwtorace.
A differenza di altri gerridi, sono privi di mwkqali in tutte le fasi del loro ciclo vitale.
Le mwkwzampe anteriori sono piuttosto tozze ed utilizzate principalmente per afferrare le prede; le gambe centrali sono le più lunghe, sino a 1,5mwla cm o più, e portano una frangia di lunghi peli sulla tibia e sul primo tarso; esse garantiscono la maggiore forza propulsiva nella locomozione, mentre la zampe posteriori, anch'esse molto lunghe, hanno prevalentemente funzione direzionale.cite-ref-cheng1975-1-1[1]

Distribuzione e habitat

La maggior parte delle specie note si trova nella mwnafascia tropicale dell'mwnqoceano Pacifico, dell'mwngoceano Atlantico e dell'mwnwoceano Indiano, in aree costiere associate con mwoamangrovie o altre piante marinecite-ref-worms-3-0[3]; sono note anche specie (mwpqmwpgH. acherontis) che vivono in mwqaacque fluviali, lontano dagli mwqqestuaricite-ref-polhemus1982-4-0[4]; molte sono mwrgendemismi ristretti ad una sola isola o a un gruppo di isole. Le 5 specie pelagiche (mwrwmwsaH. micans, mwsgH.mwsw germanus, mwtaH.mwtq sericeus, mwtgH.mwtw splendens e mwuaH.mwuq sobrinus) sono tutte esclusive dell'mwugoceano Pacifico, con l'eccezione di mwuwH.mwva micans, che è presente sia nell'mwvqoceano Indiano che nell'mwvgAtlantico.cite-ref-cheng1975-1-2[1] Sebbene esistano specie di mwwwHalobates sia nell'Atlantico che nel mwxamar Rosso, il genere non è attualmente presente nel mwxqmar Mediterraneo. Una specie fossile, mwxgmwxwHalobates ruffoi, ritrovata nel deposito di mwyaPesciara di Bolca, in mwyqprovincia di Verona, testimonia che in passato il genere fosse presente anche in quest'area.cite-ref-andersen1994-5-0[5]cite-ref-cheng2012-6-0[6]

Biologia

Sono voraci mwbapredatori; le prede principali delle specie costiere sono rappresentate da insetti terrestri caduti in acqua, mentre le specie oceaniche si nutrono prevalentemente di mwbqplancton.cite-ref-andersen2004-7-0[7]cite-ref-cheng1974-8-0[8]

Le specie costiere depongono le loro uova su rocce immerse vicino alla costa, mentre le specie oceaniche utilizzano qualsiasi oggetto galleggiante come piume di uccelli, pezzi di legno, ed anche grumi di catrame e pezzi di plastica. Una recente ricerca ha dimostrato che essi hanno imparato a sfruttare l'enorme massa di rifiuti plastici presente nel mwdwPacific Trash Vortex come nuove superfici per depositare le uova, col risultato di una maggiore concentrazione di uova nelle acque del mweavortice subtropicale del Nord Pacifico, una corrente oceanica a forma di vortice circolare localizzato tra l'mweqequatore e il 50° di mweglatitudine Nord.cite-ref-9[9]

Tra i principali predatori di questi insetti vi sono alcune specie di uccelli della famiglia mwgaHydrobatidaecite-ref-10[10] e la tartaruga mwhqmwhgCaretta carettacite-ref-11[11].

Tassonomia

Il genere fu descritto per la prima volta da mwjqJohann Friedrich von Eschscholtz, un medico mwjgestone che prese parte, tra il 1815 e il 1818, a una spedizione russa a bordo dell'incrociatore mwjwmwkaRurik, raccogliendo tre specie (mwkqH.mwkg micans, mwkwH.mwla sericeus e mwlqH.mwlg flaviventris) su cui si basò la descrizione formale del genere nel 1822.cite-ref-andersen2004-7-1[7]cite-ref-12[12]
Nel 1883 mwoaFrancis Buchanan White pubblicò una ampia monografia sul genere elencando 11 specie, tra cui 6 nuove specie raccolte durante la mwoqspedizione oceanografica dell'H.M.S. Challenger (1873–1876).cite-ref-13[13]
